1.09Metric length conversions
Both translators have significant problems converting English lengths mentioned by Tolkien into metric ones for their German readership. Sadly, especially Carroux, often drifts off into the dreaded language of fairy tales.

The fact, that both translators got the measure not exactly right, Krege less than Carroux, is of minor importance. The point is, that a ‘yard’ is neither an unusual measurement nor an old one and could reasonably be translated with ‘Meter’. Both ‘Klafter’ and ‘Elle’ as so unusual today, that I would count them into the world of fairy tale language.

In all of these both translators refuse to use ‘Meter’. It should be noted, that a Hobbit’s ‘Schritt’ is considerably shorter than that of a human, i.e. roughly a yard. Krege’s translation sounds more or less natural, but Carroux’ ‘Ellen’ and ‘Klafter’ are rather bad.

It appears to me that ‘Saum’ is too specialised a word to be used here, but basically I am trying to show, that it is very well possible for both translators to transfer simple measures as ‘foot’.

Again Carroux uses the old ‘Klafter’. Krege’s version seems very well. Still, a real translation into meters would not hurt the text, but actually make it more fluent.

Both translators deliver good renditions. Carroux, as so often, is very exact and translates word for word, but Krege presents the more natural lines. In the first case ‘eine Viertelmeile’ is definitely better than a possible ‘vierhundert Meter’.

A new approach on length conversion. Note ‘sechs Fuß’ for ‘seven feet’ and, at last, Krege’s ‘Meter’.

Carroux’ ‘Wegstunden’ is not bad, this is why Krege kept it, but in using it again for ‘miles’, he mixes a few things up, possibly trying to evade Carroux’ wording, as there actually are three miles to a league.
